Tonami Tulip Park in Toyama Prefecture

Enjoy taking the JR Johana Line which runs in the green rice fields to Tonami Station and then proceed to the Tulip Park. It takes about 15 minutes on foot. There are millions of tulips in a single town. The tulip is the official flower of Toyama Prefecture, and the town of Tonami is one of the leading producers of tulip bulbs in Japan. Every spring, Tonami hosts a festival that displays some 3 million tulips as far as the eye can see. Tulip bulb cultivation started in Tonami more than 100 years ago, in 1918. Today you can see millions of blooms in a vast array of hues. The park's expansive tulip fields are neatly arranged into broad rows of red, yellow and orange. The effect of being surrounded by all these colors can be quite overwhelming, as though you've just wandered into a van Gogh painting. A small river runs through the park, and there are waterwheels, bridges, and walking paths. Among the unique features of the Tulip Park are observation decks offering 360-degree panoramas from above, and an indoor Tulip Gallery, open year-round in case you miss the above-mentioned two-week festival.
